BVCHEA Athletic Programs

We in BVCHEA are keenly aware of the leadership role God has given us in sponsoring athletic groups and providing a structure and organization in which they can flourish. In many ways, we provide more opportunities for athletic competition for homeschool students than any other area-wide support group in the state (at least for our size community).

BVCHEA atletic teams compete against UIL, TAPPS, and Home School teams in events on the local, state, and even national levels.

We have 3 main objectives with our athletic programs:

  1. Display God-glorifying sportsmanship

  2. Strive for competitive excellence

  3. Provide an opportunity for as many home schooled students as possible to participate

The first ojective is fairly clear-cut and understandable.

The second one is sometimes misunderstood, and might appear to be contradictory to the last. It should therefore probably have a bit of explanation. For us, "competitive excellence" means that we strive to both "win the game today" as well as develop the skills & abilities to help us "win the game in the future." In practical terms this means that the younger age bracket teams are more concerned with development of the players, while the upper age bracket teams are more concerned with putting the most competitive team on the court or field. To put it bluntly, we always will strive to win, but winning is a bigger goal with the "high school" age teams.

The last objective would seem to be fairly clear, but for us it has a few practicle implications. First, all of our teams have a "no cut for performance/ability reasons" policy. So long as a player continues to practice and follow the rules of the team, they will always be a part of that team.

Second, we will attempt to field teams which maximize the ability to play of as many students as possible. This means that when sufficient number of players want to play a particular sport, we will divide the teams into whatever system is most logical for that sport (keeping in mind that no player can be "left out" for being too old).

Third, we are committed for the entire season to the players whom God sends us at the beginning of each year. This means that if a team participates in "post season play", that team stays together for all competition, local games and tournaments alike.
